Moldavite belongs to the Tektite family of natural glasses formed by interplanetary collisions. Derived from the Greek word "tektos," meaning “molten,” Tektites are made of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, and various metal oxides with an amorphous structure. Unlike other typically dark Tektites, Moldavite stands out with its deep forest green color and is the only type ideal for cutting and faceting as a gemstone. This rare stone is found exclusively near the Moldau River in the Czech Republic and is believed to have formed about 14.8 million years ago following a meteorite impact on the Bohemian plateau. Moldavite is often discovered by farmers while tilling their fields or after seasonal weather changes, making it a truly extraordinary and naturally sourced gem.
